Josh Neufeld to Present Multimedia Reading

Travel Comics Artist at New York Barnes & Noble

New York, February 25, 2005 —When was the last time a cartoonist read at Barnes & Noble? On Wednesday, March 16, at 7:30 pm autobiographical cartoonist Josh Neufeld, along with his wife/co-star Sari Wilson, will perform a multimedia reading from his graphic travelogue, A Few Perfect Hours (and Other Stories From Southeast Asia & Central Europe) at the Barnes & Noble in Park Slope, Brooklyn. He will also conduct a Q&A and sign books for readers. Neufeld was recently named by Utne Magazine as one of “nine comic artists to know about” and is an illustrator for Harvey Pekar’s American Splendor. He has received a Xeric Award for this book.

As part of a unique performance that evening, Neufeld will project stories from A Few Perfect Hours onto a screen while he and Wilson read them. This entertaining format is relatively new to bookstore readings but has found great success as a medium for presenting comics. In a feast of visual art and story, Neufeld’s graphic travelogue will take readers on a shoestring, globetrotting tour—with adventures that include exploring Thai caves, participating in a Balinese cremation ceremony, working as extras in a Singaporean soap opera, and traveling by train through war-torn Serbia.

Within the growing trend of graphic travelogues, A Few Perfect Hours has quickly swept away both critics and other readers. (In fact, Neufeld is presenting at Barnes & Noble at the request of the branch events manager.) “Pioneers the travel book in comics,” says Booklist. “A volume like the very best travel writing—like Paul Theroux, but with pictures!” claims The Austin Chronicle. The book has debuted to enthusiastic reviews from Utne Magazine, Publisher’s Weekly, Time.com, and a host of other print and online sources.

A Few Perfect Hours is the latest example of Neufeld using the comics form to explore unconventional themes and subjects. Neufeld has long been one of Harvey Pekar’s artist-collaborators, and has work in two new anthologies, American Splendor: Our Movie Year and The Best of American Splendor (Ballantine). With writer R. Walker, Neufeld co-created Titans of Finance: True Tales of Money and Business (Alternative), which premiered to wide notice from the mainstream business press. Neufeld has also collaborated with such figures as poet/memoirist Nick Flynn, radical poet Eileen Myles, and artist Martha Rosler.

Neufeld’s comics have also appeared in The Village Voice, Fortune Small Business, ReadyMade, The Chicago Reader, The Common Review, mMode, and In These Times, as well as many other venues. He lives in Brooklyn, New York, and besides being a Xeric Award winner is also an Ignatz Award nominee.

For more information about the event, contact Maria Celis-Hampton, Community Relations Manager, at (718) 832-9074. Barnes & Noble Booksellers Park Slope, 267 7th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11215. For more information about Josh Neufeld, visit JoshComix.com or call (718) 623-9838.

A Few Perfect Hours (and Other Stories From Southeast Asia & Central Europe), 128 pages. Dark blue ink on cream paper. 6-5/8” x 10-1/8”. $12.95. ISBN: 1-891867-79-2.
